The town of Alston is located in Cumbria County within the North West England province. The town has a population of over 1,100 residents and lies on the River South Tyne. The area in which Alston, Cumbria is located is referred to as a non-metropolitan or shire county.

The town’s history dates back to the 10th century although earlier mining activities have been evidenced. The town has deposits of lead, silver, zinc as well as coal and fluorspar. These deposits have formed the basis of Alston’s economic activity well into the 1950s. The mines are used as part of the area’s tourism activity and promotion. The town has a small population center with a 10:1 ratio of men to women. This created some national interest in the town as local men made an appeal for women to come. This appeal appeared in the Guardian and Daily Telegraph newspapers was featured on the British Broadcasting Company or BBC.
